The art of lei originated with the Polynesians and was brought to the Hawaiian Islands with the voyagers who settled Hawaii. Those ancient lei were used mainly for ceremony, hula and to signify their people's rank and royalty.
Today hula dancers still use fresh lei in their dance. Lei is also still used to mark special occasions both in Hawaii and around the world. Our mission is to create a space to celebrate lei. We want to acknowledge, support and share the work of lei artists while educating anyone who wants to know more about the art of lei. Our goals are to create a digital and print magazine for and about lei and lei makers. We feel that this sacred art should be perpetuated and hope to provide accurate information about the history and culture of lei and lei making. To make lei is to make Aloha.
